A Jointed Gill-Style Swimbait with Side-to-Side Head Movement
Naoyuki Mihara has consistently caught trophy-sized bass with the Gillroid Jr. and Lazy Swimmer in tournaments, media assignments, and personal fishing trips. As an angler highly experienced with both lures, he chose the gill-style jointed swimbait “Gill Soft 130” as the first release under his own brand, WAZAMONO.
In addition to its ability to entice bites with a pause during cold-water periods, its jointed construction delivers a rare side-to-side darting action for a swimbait. With consecutive movements, it can also produce a hard-lure-like side-to-side head-shaking action that is difficult to achieve with soft materials. This makes it effective not only in cold water, but also during the peak season when bass are active and willing to chase fast-moving prey. The result is a gill-style swimbait designed for year-round use.
The primary goal of the Gill Soft is to significantly improve hook-up rates, addressing one of the biggest drawbacks of tall-bodied gill-style lures.
When using the hard-bodied gill-style Gillroid Jr., Mihara repeatedly experienced bass inhaling the lure without fully taking it into their mouths. The lure’s tall body and hooks could obstruct the hook-up, sometimes leaving only tooth marks on the head. To overcome this problem, he developed a soft-material design.
The soft body folds more easily as a bass inhales the lure, allowing it to enter the fish’s mouth more readily. The hooks are also secured to the body, minimizing interference. In addition, the soft material allows each fin to be sculpted with realistic three-dimensional detail, providing a significant advantage for a lure like the Gill Soft, which is often fished with pauses to trigger strikes.
The pectoral fins are intentionally made as separate components rather than being molded as part of the body. This enhances realism and allows the fins to respond to water currents with subtle vibrations. The pelvic fins are designed to conceal most of the hook while leaving the hook point exposed. This minimizes the unnatural feel for bass without interfering with hook penetration.
The default configuration is a floating model equipped with a #2 treble hook. By inserting nail sinkers into the belly, with a total weight of approximately 1 g, anglers can tune the lure from suspending to dead-slow sinking. (The buoyancy of the internal core may vary, and water temperature can also affect buoyancy, so the required nail-sinker weight may vary slightly.)
A side hook hanger is built into the body, allowing a treble hook to be attached to either side. Depending on the conditions, anglers can remove the belly hook and switch to a side-hook configuration.
※ Hook sizes #3 and #4 are recommended to minimize bass suspicion. However, when using heavy tackle, hooks may open under excessive force, so take care when setting the hook and fighting fish. Attaching a snap to the side hook hanger also enables the lure to swim with a sideways motion.
